Why is Balance Important?
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are central components of our cell membranes
Our body cannot restore balance by itself
For millions of years, our genes have evolved to adapt our species to the requirements of the environment or ecosystem. Our body’s failure to develop the synthesis and balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids indicates that this balance has always been in what we eat. In order to recover it, therefore, today we must eat Omega-3.
Our genetic profile remains very similar to our Stone Age ancestors´
Massive scientific research indicates that most chronic illnesses and related disorders are caused by the significant unbalance of fatty acids in present day diet.
Our metabolism simply stopped working well when it could no longer find the required elements in the diet.
A critical balance
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are central components of our cell membranes and are, from a metabolic viewpoint, the starting point in the synthesis of many hormone-type substances that act up either by stimulating or inhibiting bodily processes.
These fatty acids are designed to function jointly and antagonistically
Omega-6 fatty acids spawn substances that cause inflammation, promote blood stickiness and blood vessel constriction, affecting processes that are vital to the capacity of the body’s immunological system to restore and protect itself. On the contrary, Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, counteract blood clogging, and dilate blood vessels, neutralizing the effects of Omega-6.
The above shows the paramount importance of proper balance between these fatty acids
Too much of one and not enough of the other can be dangerous to our health. The balance between them is therefore of critical importance for our body to function properly. The FAO/OMS have issued recommendations about the adequate intake of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and coincide that the ratio between them should fall within their limits in human milk (n-6: n-3 approx. 5:1).
The Genesis of the Unbalance
Al throughout history, natural foods, both animal-origin and plant-origin, had maintained constant characteristics, including balance between polyunsaturated and saturated fats, particularly between Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential fatty acids. With the advent of the industrial revolution, some 150 years ago, intensive growth of grain, cereal, and animal fodder modified this long-standing balance and brought about increased consumption of saturated fatty acids and, hence, of more Omega-6 essential fatty acids. The estimated current ratio is 10 to 40 Omega-6 units per 1 Omega-3 unit.

New Theories
Until recently, the distinction between food fats was limited to saturated and unsaturated. Today, new theories clearly establish the importance of the ratio of unsaturated fats among each other.
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are two types of unsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats are found in large amounts in many land plant foods, including olive oil, peanuts, avocado and canola oil. It is recommended that 15% of our required caloric intake come from monounsaturated fats.
Polyunsaturated fats are mostly present in plant foods such as sunflower, corn, and soy oil. It is recommended that about 7% of our caloric intake come from polyunsaturated fats. There are two types of polyunsaturated fatty acids: Omega-3 series fatty acids, present in marine life and in some land plants, and Omega-6 series fatty acids concentrated in land-based vegetable foods such as sunflower and corn oil. To perform their vital roles in our body, these two groups of fatty acids must be balanced; that is, for each Omega-3 gram in our body there should be 5 to 10 grams of Omega-6s
(Omega-3: Omega-6 = 1:5).
Inflammatory ailments
Several scientific papers conclude that inflammatory ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, can be treated with Omega-3 fatty acids to reduce joint pains.
Mental Health
An Omega-3 fatty acids-rich diet protects against Alzheimer’s disease, even in cases of genetic predisposition. The effect of fatty acids is evident both in the prevention and in symptoms relief once the disease has been declared.
Omega-3s fortify the newborn child’s immunological system
An additional Omega-3 benefit concerns the immunological system. Research findings show a regulatory effect in the synthesis of substances that may cause disorders such as fever, pain, swelling and irritation.
Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) with Omega-3
Essential fatty acids help control ADHD by improving concentration skills and by helping develop a systematic activity, because they are indispensable to the brain section that coordinates memory and reasoning.
Omega-3 are essential to the child
During fetal life and up to the first year of life, there is an increase in the accumulation process of Omega-3 fatty acids in the baby’s brain. Fatty acids requirement increases during the growing and developing phases of cell tissues. Deficit of essential fatty acids may cause significant alterations in growth, learning, and development of motor functions, since these nutrients form the brain’s cell membranes and are a part of the nervous system structure.
Omega-3s are critical for the fetus’ visual development
Omega-3 fatty acids are important for eye vision because they help the brain capture images faster. This happens because of their high concentration in the eye’s retina, responsible for transforming light energy into nervous energy. If we compare the eye to a camera, the retina represents the film. Deficit of Omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy can cause decreased visual skills in the newborn child.
The skin and Omega-3
A healthy skin is largely a reflection of the body’s inner state, and the diet is central to preserving its good condition. Several investigations confirm the beneficial effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on the skin, particularly in alleviating skin lesions in eczema or psoriasis patients.
Post-partum depression
Pregnancy and puerperium (the post-partum stage) are times when many physical, psychological and social changes take place, increasing vulnerability to psychic disorders. Very low Omega-3 levels have been associated with depressive states. Research shows a decrease in Omega-3 fatty acids in the brain of depressed patients, and a correlation between the fatty acid decrease level in the cell membranes and the level of depression.
Pregnancy and nursing
During fetal life and up to the first year of life, there is increased accumulation of Omega-3 fatty acids in the baby’s brain and retina, at the mother’s expense. This is a critical process in the child’s psychomotor development and growth. Omega-3 fatty acids are transferred from the mother to the fetus through the placenta, and after birth through the mother’s milk; therefore there is a correlation between the mother’s intake of essential fatty acids and those received by the baby. In addition, Omega-3 reduce the risk of pregnancy-associated hypertension, through its anti-hypertension effect as described in “Benefits to your Heart”
Increase resistance to illness and inflammation
The task of many immunological cells depends on their interface with several nutrients: there is evidence that lipids play an immune-regulatory role. Deficiency of essential fatty acids reduces the immunological response.
Improve concentration
Fluidity in the cell membranes is critical to their functioning. Brain fats, formed by fatty acids, are a part of the cell walls’ structure. The higher the Omega-3 content, the more flexible and fluid the membrane remains. An Omega-3-deprived diet has consequence on the brain’s structure and functioning, as well as in learning and concentration.
Prevent depression, regulate mood
Conclusions of multiple research show that low Omega-3 levels are associated with depressive syndromes, precisely because of its importance in the nervous system process. An adequate Omega-3 fatty acids intake can prevent depression and help in its treatment.
Prevent cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death
Arrhythmia is one of the most serious complications in case of infarct. Recent research indicates that Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-arrhythmic effect and can stabilize the heart electrically, decreasing the probability of sudden death following a heart attack.
Fatty acids keep the cell walls healthy and flexible, reducing the risks of cardiac rhythm problems, and preventing blood clogging.
Reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol, increases HDL (good) cholesterol, and reduces triglycerides. Research has shown that daily doses of 3 to 4 g of Omega-3 reduce triglycerides concentration by 45%.
Source: country study by Verschuren et al.., 1995.
These findings also explain the dramatic variation in cardiovascular death rates from one region to another, regardless of total cholesterol figures, and depending exclusively on the Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio in the daily diet. The following table shows cardiovascular death rates in relation to cholesterol levels in seven different countries or regions.
Lower Blood Pressure
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a risk factor in cardiovascular diseases. Intake of saturated fats elevates blood pressure. Research has demonstrated that increase in consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids lowers blood pressure.

Daily Omega-3 Requirements
Recommendations from international health organizations on Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids consumption coincide in that the desirable ratio should fall within their limits in human milk (n-6:n-3 approx. 5:1)
The required amount of Omega-3 fatty acids depends on individual life cycles and on each person’s physiological or pathological (illness) state, which may require augmented intake of fatty acids. On average, it is estimated that 1% and 4% of the total energy requirements should come from Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, respectively.

2. Improve concentration
3. Increase resistance to illness and inflammation
What are Omega-3s?
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that our body needs for proper functioning, just as it needs vitamins and minerals
They are called “essential” in the biochemical sense: our body does not produce them; therefore, they must be incorporated through the food we eat. The interest in Omega-3s was sparkled by research results on Eskimos and other groups living in the Mediterranean shore, which showed extremely low rates of cardiovascular accidents. These groups consume large amounts of fatty fishes. The Japanese also showed infrequently lower rates of cardiac infarcts.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a fundamental part of the cell membrane, and are from a metabolic point of view the starting point for synthesis of many hormone-like action substances, which act by maximizing or inhibiting bodily processes.
Why are Omega-3s Good for Your Health?

5. Well Being for the Elderly
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are present in body fat and tissues. During its evolution throughout millions of years, the human body has been designed to perform with a perfect balance of both fatty acids, each one playing an important and irreplaceable role in the protection of our life.
Simultaneously with a dramatic alteration of this healthy balance in favour of Omega-6 fatty acids in our diet (mostly from vegetable oils, animal fats, dairies), we have seen an increase in chronic and inflammatory diseases worldwide, and innumerable scientific studies have pointed out the lack of Omega-3 as a major cause of dysfunction.
In order to restore the lost balance, it is thus necessary to reduce the intake of Omega-6 fatty acids, while increasing the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. Your body engine will then improve its performance and protect you naturally against many avoidable diseases.

Minerals and Vitamins for your Health
Extra minerals and vitamins for your health
The text on this section is currently being updated
What do Antioxidants do to your health
Most antioxidants are found in plant foods, which explain why including fruits, grains, vegetables and cereals in our diet is so beneficial.
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals, natural colorants and other vegetal and enzyme compounds (bodily substances that participate in numerous metabolic processes), that can block the adverse effect of the so-called free radicals. The action of free radicals is linked both to cancer and to artery damage caused by “oxidized” cholesterol, which explains the direct association between these molecules and cardiovascular diseases.
Antioxidant Capacity
The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test is the best-known index of the antioxidant capacity in a food element. It provides an accurate way to determine the capacity of a food or fruit to destroy or neutralize the free radicals in the body, and to combat illnesses. This test assigns a score in the ORAC scale to the tested substance, reflecting its capacity and speed to perform as antioxidant.
The Proteins and You
Proteins produce satiety…
Proteins are organic substances formed by amino acids - its simplest unit -, some of which are essential (cannot be synthesize by the human body), so they must be a part of our diet.
Isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine are essential amino acids. The quality of the different proteins is determined in relation to the amount of essential amino acids in their content. Proteins with sufficient amounts of each of the essential amino acids are of high biological value, and when an essential amino acid is missing, then the biological value of of the protein decreases.
Research conducted on the digestibility and biological value of the protein content in chia Benexia has shown that chía Benexia is a good quality protein source, as it has all essential amino acids.
Protein functions: plastic, structural or building
Proteins are a part of our bodily structure and provide the necessary material for growth and repair of human tissues and organs; for example, keratin is present in the skin, nails and hair; collagen is present in bones, tendons and cartilages, and elastin is mostly found in ligaments.
Regulatory Function
Some proteins contribute to regulate cell activities. Some hormones are proteinaceous in nature (insulin, the growth hormone), many enzymes are proteins that enable organic reactions, and some neurotransmitters display an amino acid structure or are amino acid derivatives and regulate the transmission of nerve impulses.
Defense Function
Proteins are part of the body’s immune or defense system (antibodies, immunoglobulin). They intervene in the coagulation process and prevent the loss of blood when a blood vessel is damaged.
Transportation Function
Proteins act as fats (apoproteins) and oxygen (hemoglobin) transport carriers. They also facilitate incorporation into the cells (as membrane transporters) of substances such as glucose, amino acids, etc.
Energetic Function
When intake of carbohydrates and fats is insufficient to meet the body’s energetic requirements, the amino acids in proteins are used as energy fuel (1 gr. of protein provides 4 Kcal).
Why is Fiber so important for us?
Eating fiber is beneficial to our health in general.
Fiber is a nutrient or substance found in original plant foods, or in fiber-enriched foods. It cannot be digested by our body; instead fiber circulates through the digestive tract and is ultimately eliminated with other wastes. And that is precisely one of its major qualities: while fiber does its functions and provides its benefits, it is not fattening and contributes no additional calories.
Avoiding constipation
By creating solid stools and absorbing water, fiber increases the volume of the feces which thus become more voluminous and less compact. In addition, fiber shortens the transit time in the intestinal tract.
Preventing colon cancer
While a fiber-rich diet does not protect by itself against colorectal cancer, initial observational epidemiological research indicates that populations that eat fiber-rich diets show a lesser incidence of colon cancer.
Lowering cholesterol levels
Eating fiber results in reduced absorption of cholesterol, which helps with prevention and treatment of disorders related to high cholesterol blood levels.
Controlling diabetes
An increase in the intake of fiber, particularly of the insoluble type, would improve blood sugar control , reducing hyperinsulinaemia and lipid plasmatic concentration in type-2 diabetes.
Preventing and/or treating diverticulosis conditions
The excessive pressure that the colon wall muscles must exert to expel small-volume feces increases the pressure within the colon and can contribute to development of diverticulosis. As fiber hydrates and increases the fecal bolus than transits in our intestinal tract, the feces - end product of our digestive system - become softer and more voluminous.
Maintaining a healthy weight
Fiber-rich diets can help control obesity: firstly, fiber-rich foods have less calories for the same volume of food; secondly, this type of diet promotes eating smaller-size portions as they take longer to chew and, because of their volume, can produce a feeling of satiation sooner; and lastly, fiber-rich diets sequester part of the sugars and fats eaten and slow down their absorption, thus decreasing the ultimate amount of calories ingested.
How much daily fiber is necessary?
Try to eat 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day, but do it gradually to allow your body to get used to it!

Growing Child Health
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and breastfeeding is central to the baby’s development and growth
The dietary changes associated with our cultural development have caused lower contents of essential fatty acids in maternal milk. Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and breastfeeding is central to the baby’s development and growth, particularly from the third month of gestation throughout the first year, when their requirement is higher for the development of the nervous and visual systems
1. Omega-3s are critical for the fetus’ visual development
2. Omega-3s are essential to the child’s development and growth
3. Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) with Omega-3
4. Omega-3s fortify the newborn child’s immunological system
Women´s Health
Benexia™ for Women´s Health
Essential for:
1. Pregnancy and nursing
2. Post-partum depression
3. The skin and Omega-3
Benefits for your Heart
Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in many countries, and a major public health issue worldwide.
Cardiovascular risks can be altered by implementing healthier habits, among which the most important is the quality of the food ingested. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have significant heart-protecting effects:
1. Lower blood pressure
2. Reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels
3. Prevent cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death

Omega-3 Content: Quality & Quantity
5g of ALA Omega-3 in 25g of seed!
Of all Omega-3 fatty acid sources, Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) has the larger concentration of alpha-linolenic fatty acid known to date: 63.2%. 25 g. of Benexia™ Chia seeds contain 5.2 g of ALA-type Omega-3 fatty acid. The world’s offer of Omega-3 is extremely scarce.
What are Chia’s advantages over other Omega-3 sources?
Chia can be compared to fish oil, canola (colza) oil, flax oil and grain, or algae oil:

Clearly, Chia has a competitive edge over alternative Omega-3 sources.
Some comments:
Fish oil
• Not all fish oils are beneficial: the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has identified only the Menhaden species as a good Omega-3 source.
• It contains cholesterol.
• The marine environment is polluted: fishes concentrate toxic substances that may be hazardous to human health.
Flax
• Contains potentially dangerous substances (increase in risk of cardiac conditions and myocardial infarction).
• Not recommended for pregnancy and breast-feeding periods.
• Consumption is banned in some countries (France).
Flax, algae and fish oil
• They give off a ‘fishy smell’ when deteriorating.
There are other products with Omega-3 content, such as
• Fatty fishes (herring, mackerel, tuna, sardine, salmon), shellfish.
• Tofu.
• Dry fruits (nuts, almonds).
The disadvantage of these products is their very low Omega-3 level, which requires consumption of large quantities, which in turn can cause other types of problems (excess of calories) in some cases. In addition, their low Omega-3 content is incompatible with the required balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6.

High ORAC Antioxidants
Benexia™ Chia has an ORAC of 8200 umoles per 100 g. of seeds
Antioxidants are a group of vegetable elements that block the damaging effects of the so-called free radicals. Most antioxidants are found in plant foods, a fact that explains the benefits of including fruit, grains, vegetables and cereals in our daily diet.
The most important antioxidants found in Benexia™ Chia are caffeic acid and chlorgenic acid. Both elements are primary and synergic antioxidants and significantly contribute to the strong antioxidant activity of Benexia™ Chia.
These antioxidant properties are considerably stronger than those found in ferulic acid, as well as stronger than those in regular antioxidants such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol)

Soluble and insoluble fiber
There are two types of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble: Soluble fiber is mostly found in oatmeal bran, barley, nuts, beans, lentils, peas, and some fruits and vegetables.
Insoluble fiber is found in wheat bran, vegetables and whole grains.
A panel of dietary experts in fiber has concluded that the ideal dietary fiber intake should provide a insoluble fiber to soluble fiber ratio of 5 to 3:1. Chia seeds contain 5,3 g of soluble fiber and 35,9 g of insoluble fiber per 100 g of seeds, that is, a 6:1 ratio.

The Company
Solid partnerships and granted quality products behind Benexia
Functional Products Trading S.A. is a Chilean company owned by Chilean and Argentinean capitals. It was founded to market the Chia seeds produced by Functional Product S.A., an Argentinean enterprise located in the Salta region, where the crops are grown.
Functional Product S.A. was created as an initiative from farmers who participated in the “Northwestern Argentina Regional Project”, a project sponsored by public and private U.S. and Argentinean organizations. The project was intended to identify and produce alternative crops, at an industrial scale, to improve the economy for farmers in the Argentinean Northwestern area.
The project was started in 1991; the Chia seed was chosen because of its exceptional nutritional properties.
After more than 10 years of careful seed selection, today Functional Product S.A. is the world’s largest and most effective Chia producer, with unlimited production-expanding capacity. The company has acquired considerable know-how and expertise during these last years. Currently, Functional Products S.A. produces Chia seeds in several countries: growing the seeds in diverse and far-apart areas (rather unusual for new crops) considerably reduces the risk of climate-caused contingencies.
Functional Product S.A. and Tecnobel Ltda., a Chilean marketing company, joined in the creation in Chile of Functional Products Trading S.A. to market Chia seeds for human consumption. Functional Products Trading S.A. is in charge of developing the demand for Chia seeds and by-products (oil, fiber, etc.) worldwide.
Our Mission
The mission of Functional Products Trading S.A. is to promote Chia seeds and by-products worldwide, as a new, natural source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, creating added value for its stockholders and advancing the development of Chia crops at massive industrial levels.

Other Certifications

Kosher
Benexia is Kosher and Parve for all year around including passover.
GMO Free
Benexia Chia crops are completely GMO-free; the seeds have been grown naturally, following a thorough and lengthy selection process that developed for many years and will continue in the future.
Gluten Free
A gluten-free diet is recommended amongst other things in the treatment of coeliac disease and wheat allergy. It is a diet completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, oats and triticale, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent. Although some people for whom a gluten-free diet is recommended can tolerate oat products and some medical practitioners say they may be permitted, there is controversy about including them in a gluten-free diet because studies on the subject are incomplete.

History
From the Aztecs and Mayas to us
CHIAN: langage mayan “chian” meaning “energizer, fortifier”

Pre-Colombian civilizations used Chia seeds as raw material for the preparation of medicines, nutritional blends, even paints. It was one of the main crops used by pre-Colombian societies, second only to corn and beans in significance. At the time of the Spanish conquest, there were at least 20 botanic species in Mesoamerica used for domestic purposes. Four of these were outstanding from a nutritional standpoint: amaranth, beans, Chia and corn. These four elements formed the basic components of daily diet. It is worth noting that the diet of ancient Aztecs was based exclusively on these grains; furthermore, it totally complied with present-day dietary requirements, as determined by the Food and Agriculture Organization-World Health Organization (FAO-WHO).
Chia seeds were consumed as food mixed with other crops, as a beverage mixed with water, blended with flour, and used in medicines; it was even pressed to obtain oil that was then used as a component for body and facial paint. Chia seeds were given to the Aztecs by their conquered peoples as a tribute, and in turn were offered by them to the gods as part of their religious rites.
Chia was a central dietary component not only to Aztecs, but also to that other great pre-Colombian civilization in Mesoamerica: the Mayas. Today’s Chiapas State, in Mexico, located in what was formerly Mayan territory, owes its name to the nahautl word ‘Chiapan’, which means ‘Chia River’. This indicates that Chia was grown in this area since ancient times.
Chia seeds are still consumed today in many American communities. It is used by Aztec and Maya descendents to prepare a popular beverage called “Fresh Chia”. Mixed with lemonade, it makes a refreshing drink consumed today both in Mexico and in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Southwestern U.S.
The Spanish conquerors repressed the natives, eliminating their traditions, and destroying most of their intensive agricultural production and trade system. Many of the crops that made up pre-Colombian Americans’ core diet were eliminated by the Spaniards because of their close association with religion, and replaced with foreign species (wheat, barley, carrots, etc.) that were in great demand among the conquerors. Five hundred years later, modern science has concluded that pre-Colombian diets were far superior to the ones consumed today in the same region.
Florentine Codex - General History of the Things of New Spain - Fray Bernardino de SahagúnAfter being forced into oblivion, today Chia offers the world a new opportunity to improve human nutrition, providing a natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and dietetic fiber.
Modern science is now able to explain why the diet of ancient civilizations included Chia as a basic staple. Both its chemical composition and nutritional value represent an enormous potential for the food and industrial markets. Thus, technological information is providing an excellent opportunity for an agricultural industry that can offer the world’s markets a product that is “new and old at the same time”
The Plant
Rediscovering a forgotten crop of the Aztecs, Mayas and Nahualts. “The come back of the chia seed”

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a yearly summer plant of the Labiatae family. Its small oval seeds are about 2 millimeters long, black or dark brown, occasionally white or gray. This species originated in the hilly area spreading from West Central Mexico to Northern Guatemala.
The Chia plant thrives in tropical or sub-tropical climate. Industrial crops destined for consumer markets are grown in Northern Argentina and in Bolivia.
The first harvest requires 5 months, during which the small chia plant grows to about one meter high.
This is a bisexual plant with light purple or white flowers growing bouquet-like on top of the stem and producing a small fruit.
The fruit, shaped as an indehiscent achaenium, contains an oval grain 1.5 to 2 mm long and 1 mm in diameter. Its coloring varies from gray to light brown, intertwined with thin black nervures, in blending beige.
